Lydia received her law degree in 1995 from the University of Windsor and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1996. She has practiced in a clinic environment, a small firm and a large firm environment within the City of Thunder Bay. Prior to this, she practiced law in Windsor, Ontario, near her family home in Essex County. An employment opportunity attracted her to Thunder Bay. Having been raised in small-town Ontario, she quickly fell in love with the people and opportunities in Northwestern Ontario and made a decision to stay.

Lydia is pleased to be opening The Northern Law Group with Randall V. Johns and Tony Carfagnini in the City of Thunder Bay. She is excited to introduce this new and dynamic concept affording clients the personal connection of a sole practice with the supports of firm environment.

Lydia Stam has an established practice in all aspects of Family Law, from the negotiation and mediation of marriage or cohabitation agreements to separation agreements, dealing with issues of support, custody, division of family property, and mobility rights. She also represents clients in both the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice when negotiated agreements are not an option. She has also completed the Alternative Dispute Resolution Course with the Stitt Feld Handy group.

Lydia also has a growing practice in Business Immigration Law (visitor visas, work permits, temporary and permanent resident status), an area of law unique in Northwestern Ontario. Keeping current on evolving regulations, policies and requirements, Lydia provides this service to investors, entrepreneurs, resort owners/operators, retirees as well as skilled workers and employees relocating to Canada. She also represents clients who are expanding their business into the United States in securing various transfer and treaty visas. This expertise will benefit employee and business owners alike.

Lydia’s knowledge of immigration issues will also benefit individuals needing permission to enter Canada or the United States, who might otherwise be denied entry due to past indiscretions.

Lydia also represents clients before the Immigration Appeal Division and the Federal Court of Canada with respect to the client’s ability to remain in Canada or enter Canada. This service is provided to individuals who do not always meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Lydia is on the executive of the Thunder Bay Law Association and is co-chair of the Family Law Committee and the Retention of Women in Private Practice Committee. She also chairs the Family Law Continuing Legal Education hosted each year to lawyers in Northwestern Ontario.
